Mindful Gratitude

Too often we are so busy with our lives that we get caught up in the "doing" rather than just "being." We forget to stop and take a pause to just be present in gratitude. True freedom can exist when we take that sacred pause and experience the “here and now.” It is then that insight and joy can blossom and flourish.

Practicing mindfulness helps me be more present in the moment and aware of the here and now. Some of my most serene moments have come about in the midst of the storm of a hectic day.  Practicing mindfulness teaches me that I can feel centered anytime and anywhere.

Right now a gentle snow is falling outside of my window, and I am grateful for my wonderful friends and family.  Thank you all for being a part of my here and now!

The Hottest Pink Party Ever Raises $5 Million for Breast Cancer Research!

Sir Elton John and his Band rocked the Waldorf=Astoria and gave us a concert of such energy and vigor, the whole house was on its feet dancing in the aisles!
See the Pink Carpet pictures of this event in our Hottest Pink Party Ever Photo Gallery. More pictures to come!

Sir Elton dedicated this performance to the memory of his devoted friend and BCRF Advisory Board member, Linda Stein. We are deeply touched by Sir Elton's generosity and the opportunity to celebrate the life of one of BCRF's most ardent supporters with a concert by an artist of such unsurpassed talent.

Once again, BCRF offered the hottest ticket in New York City for another evening of music fun and fundraising. Elizabeth Hurley, our 'resident' emcee, paid special tribute to Evelyn Lauder, BCRF Founder and Chariman:

"Evelyn Lauder, you out-do yourself every year--and this year you have turned up the heat and topped it all, filling the Hottest Pink Room Ever with the Hottest People Ever," said Hurley. "You, our guests, our friends our generous donors are here to support a great cause, and most of all, lets face it, we are all here to pay tribute to the Hottest Gal of all – our friend and inspiration Evelyn Lauder."

Mrs. Lauder warmly welcomed 1,200 guests and supporters. "I can never say thank you too often to those who support our work and especially those who have helped to make this the Hottest Pink Party Ever," she said. "We are hot on the trail and proud of the enormous progress The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is making."

Larry Norton, MD, Chairman of the BCRF Executive Board of Scientific Advisors, and Director, Breast Cancer Programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, addressed the party-goers and conveyed his gratitude that funding through BCRF is gaining increased and vital recognition within the medical community.

In addition to Hurley and Sir Elton, several stars came out to support the Foundation, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Padma Lakshmi, Project Runway winner Christian Siriano, Carson Kressley, Katrina Bowden, Lipstick Jungle's David Alan Basche, Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, Vera Wang and Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito.

Hazzah!

End of the Year Thank You

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make 2007 a success!

In the last year, Jonäno launched eColorgrown Collections and new Sami Baby Collections.  The creative process in developing these collections took me to the Brazilian coastline of Paraíba where enchanting sounds sights and smells charm and inspire.  I am ready to do it all over again in 2008.

Special thanks goes to Maysa, whose selfless work in developing an agricultural and textile fabrication collective in Brazil reflects true commitment to equal opportunities and fair working conditions.

We are excited to debut Taos Collections in 2008. The newest addition to our design team, Trish, has been invaluable in so many ways. We continue in a collaborative effort to develop designer eco chic fashions.

I am looking forward to 2008 and all of the blessings and surprises that lie ahead. Thanks to everyone. Take care and we'll see you on the road.

WEDNESDAY, 18 JULY

Dear Friends,

I am on my way to the Brazilian Coastline where our latest collections have found their inspiration. This, my third trip to S America, will be highlighted by a visit to the "without land" people.;offered the opportunity to farm otherwise un-utilized or underutilized land, the farmers are provide with the chance to grow crops on privately owned fields. Schools have been built for these landless farmers.

Brazil’s Landless Worker's Movement , or Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, was born from the concrete, isolated struggles for land that rural workers were developing in southern Brazil at the end of the 1970's. Today, the MST is active in 23 states of Brazil’s 27 states and involves more than 1.5 million people. About 350,000 families have been settled onto their own land through this struggle. Schools have been built for over 160,000 children, with now over 1800 public schools on MST settlements. About 3900 educators paid by these rural towns have developed a curiculum specifically designed for the rural MST schools. In conjunction with UNESCO and more than 50 universities, the MST is developing a literacy program for approximately 19,000 teenagers and adults in the settlements.

MST families are conscious of the need to preserve the natural environment and human health. Accordingly, in September of 1999, landless families introduced Bionatur seeds, produced without any pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals. Families have also worked to preserve forests, such as in Pontal do Paranapanema (S„o Paulo), and to produce herbal medicines. To show their solidarity with those living in poverty and suffering because of natural disasters, MST members sent seeds to both Venezuela and Cuba.Today the MST continues with its fight for agrarian reform, for a free, sovereign and egalitarian Brazil, and for a continent free from the FTAA.

We are glad to support these farmers and families as parters in producing our upcoming line of colorgrown cottons that get their array of hues from nature. Just like tulips are now available in many colors, colorgrown organic cotton comes in shades like sage green, camel brown, and even rose red. Look for this new offering soon.

Support for a LIVE EARTH

For those of you who attended one of the worldwide events yesterday, I must say I was only able to watch on MSN, but my heart and soul were with you. In a step closer towards our mission to act mindfully, we are glad to announce that Jonano has recently moved to fulfillment by a green fulfillment center, PLANET ACCESS COMPANY (PAC)

They offer up virtually paperless fulfillment and operate on the mission of offering not only work opportunities but also a unique program providing large-scale outdoor adventures and vacations for people with developmental disabilities. I even heard rumors that they are on their way to be LEED Certified! LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. This is social responsibility at its finest.

By the way, for those of you who hadn't heard about the 7-7-7 event, here's the skinny:

Live Earth, a worldwide concert event, was the first of many planned by the Alliance for Climate Protection, former Vice President Al Gore's newly founded organization.

I look forward to the next event...

my many thanks to you!

I feel so grateful to those of you who I have met who have offered up feedback and encouragement. Without you as inspiration my work wouldn't be possible. Many thanks as well to American Spa Magazine for featuring the Jonano Limited Edition Daffodil Tee in their recent issue. This will bring increased awareness to the need to continue towards our goal of achieving a World without Cancer.

February 4, 2007 is World Cancer Day

Prevention is the focus of World Cancer Day on Sunday, February 4, 2007. Their slogan "Today's Children, Tomorrow's World,"  conveys a lifesaving message that long-term healthy habits and lifestyles in the home help shape a healthier future. Their global campaign encourages parents to choose wisely act as healthy role models for their children to help prevent adult cancer later in life.

Unlike adult cancers, the causes of most childhood cancers are not yet known. Research has not been able to tell us yet why certain children develop cancer and others don't. Thanks to programs like these our future generations will be strong and healthy.

The calm without the storm

What a week! I’m now sitting with my cat curled in my lap surfing on the internet getting ready to head to NYC next week – incredible! We are also gearing up for several events this spring including the Day Spa Association Show, Global ECO, the Green Fest in Chicago and Change the World Tour.

I feel extremely calm and collected going into this whirlwind because of the help and assistance from the students and faculty at IADT-VEGAS, Julia Szkiba, David Vace and Howard Gabe of Global Eco. They along with our terrific sales representatives - Pat, Linda and Ashley are amazing and experienced at getting organization together beautifully.

Here in our little treehouse,  my cat and I are so grateful of the fantastic talent surrounding us daily.

Beginning Afresh

New Year's resolutions? Easy to make, easy to break. By making New Year's resolutions are we inevitably setting ourselves up for failure? Or is the process of taking inventory and setting fresh goals a laudable one?

The process of transition into the New Year gives us the opportunity begin again.  The challenge is to discard bad habits and to begin afresh. We might resolve be more tolerant of others or to develop a greater to kindness and patience in the face of challenge. I ask and meditate for the removal of the burden of self and to be of greater service to others in this great journey I find myself on. Best to all of you in you own journeys.

Metta

Many of you have asked me, “What does metta mean?” I use it as a salutation and consciously strive to practice the principles of metta in daily life.

Metta means lovingkindness. The word metta is from Pali, the language of the earliest Buddhist texts. Metta is universal, finding expression in all religions and societies.

I learned about metta ten years ago when my friend Carol invited me to join her at a beginner retreat in the Berkley Springs woods of West Virginia.  Carol told me that this was no ordinary retreat center. The Bhavana Society turned out to be life changing for me that weekend, and I learned about metta.

I learned that just as a mother gives her own life to protect her child, so metta only gives and never wants anything in return. To promote one's own interest is a primordial motivation of human nature. When this urge is transformed into the desire to promote the interest and happiness of others, not only is the basic urge of self-seeking overcome, but the mind becomes universal by identifying its own interest with the interest of all. By making this change one also promotes one's own well-being in the best possible manner.

Apart from its higher implications, today metta is a pragmatic necessity. In a world menaced by all kinds of destructiveness, metta in deed, word and thought is the only constructive means to bring concord, peace and mutual understanding to all. It is challenge to consciously practice metta on a daily basis. Today I strive for progress and not perfection, and when I make mistakes I make amends to them more quickly.

I will be once again traveling to West Virginia in the New Year to support the residents of the Bhavana Society in having their own retreat. Throughout the year the residents of the Bhavana Society support the public in offering a wide variety of retreat experiences, and this is an opportunity to provide support and thanks. The society provides meditation retreats for the public on a donation basis.

SATURDAY, 02 DECEMBER

Dear Friends,

I just received a year end greeting from Evelyn Lauder, founder and chairperson of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Her message was inspiring: Real risks pay off! Thirteen years ago, the BCRF took a chance in founding an organization that would seek out the best researchers and give them financial resources -- not through the standard peer review process, which is all too often predicated on moving along established paths, but rather through high-risk seed funding for the most innovative ideas in medical research. I am proud to participate in the solution and to announce that for the 2006-2007 funding cycle The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has awarded $24.3 million -- nearly triple what we awarded just five years ago -- to 115 pioneers in the work to eliminate breast cancer.

BCRF takes its mission seriously. The Foundation perseveres in directing at least 85 cents of every dollar raised to our researchers, and in 2006 our administrative costs were once again less than 11% of revenues. For the fifth consecutive year, Charity Navigator honored BCRF with its highest rating of four stars -- meaning BCRF outperformed 98.7% of more than 5,000 evaluated charities. Accolades like this place us at the top of the list of breast cancer organizations.

Thanks to everyone who has purchase a daffodil tee in support of a loved one, in memory of someone special or to show support for the cause. Your support shows survivors, researchers, friends and family, how much you believe in their future. Prevention and a cure in our lifetime cannot come true if we slow down. Every gift we receive makes new research possible. You can help us move closer to a world without breast cancer.

With best wishes to you and your loved ones for the happiest of holidays and a healthy new year,

/Bonnie

SUNDAY, 19 NOVEMBER

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006, divided into two equal parts, to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development in a trickle up theory that works. Lasting peace can not be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Bravo!

My customers give me energy

The contact I have with our customers and clients really gives me energy. There are two sorts of people – those who give energy and those who take. I’m glad that I have the opportunity to meet and work together with so many people who are energy-givers. Through my e-mail and letters and by meeting you personally I get constant confirmation that I’m moving in the right direction with my designs and products. And if I start to go wrong, then you tell me that too. BRILLIANT!
